Gifford’s Gin

Blackfish Distillery’s Gifford’s Gin is a unique take on gin. You first sip is greeted, not with gin’s regular citrus or pine notes, but with the warmth of cinnamon. The spirit is subtly spicy while still being classically refreshing. It’s a great choice when you want your favorite gin-cocktail to be a little different. We...
Skip Rock Distillers Rye Whiskey

Skip Rock Distillers Rye Whiskey

The worst part of this Whiskey is that it’s a Biennial release. We had trouble putting this bottle down. It’s an inspired take on the style, providing the flavor you would expect out of a rye without the bite. It’s exceptionally smooth for a rye, and we discovered it was far too easy to drink. We caught ourselves on a 2nd and 3rd dram before we stopped ourselves. We had other Whiskey’s we wanted to try that night. We drank half the bottle in a sitting, not a feat by any means for such a small bottle. We have mixed feeling about the 375ml bottle size. On one hand, you spend less. We paid $25 after tax. There are decent commercial Ryes for less, in a bottle twice the size but after tasting it though, we think you’ll agree with us. Its a bargain for such a charactered whiskey. Our only complaint is that the bottle empties itself too quickly! Its a little young at 2 years and a few months in the barrel. We would love to taste a barrel strength version of this twice the age....
Valley Shine Distillery Benjamin’s Bourbon

Valley Shine Distillery Benjamin’s Bourbon

Our particular bottle of Benjamin’s Bourbon was aged 3 years, 2 months and 7 days. I haven’t seen enough of the bottles to know what range they are bottled but if Ben continues to log the aging on future labels it will be fun to see how age affects the juice. What comes from this bottle is pure, simple and friendly. At first sip I get a light brown sugar, the kind that you smell from apple crisp still hot from the oven. It’s just that inviting. If I were to share this bottle I would feel confident that my airy scotch drinking friends would find it welcome their tastebuds to Americana and it would be none too harsh for an introductory taste for the new bourbonite. It’s refined gold like this that excites us for Valley Shine’s future. Ben and Stacey clearly have a vision, nose and taste for quality....
Valley Shine Distillery Red X Gin

Valley Shine Distillery Red X Gin

Elegant. Balanced. Smooth. Those three words articulate perfectly the reasons why this gin is our go-to. Its not your Grandma’s Gin. If you think you don’t like gin based on experiences with Tanqueray or Beefeater, you need to revisit Gin.  Rather than overpowering pine Red X Gin’s botanical flavors are full but balanced while remaining fresh and drinkable with hints of evergreen and citrus.  Great in Martini’s and simple cocktails alike— and it looks good on your bar cart to...

Sound Spirits Ebb + Flow Gin

We loved Ebb + Flow Gin’s well-balanced botanical flavors. If you think you don’t like gin based on experiences with Pine-sol-like commercial gins, you need to try Ebb + Flow. It has forward flavors while still being fresh and drinkable. The smooth flavors, gently lap against the palate with citrus and evergreen. This gin would bring life to any summer cocktail but is flavorful enough to be enjoyed on the rocks. We compare it most often with ValleyShine’s Red X Gin, they are both heavy on the citrus side and have a heavier mouth...
Skip Rock Distillers Nocino

Skip Rock Distillers Nocino

Skip Rock Distillers is one out of only a handful of distilleries in the U.S. that crafts a Nocino Liqueur. Nocino is a thick and sticky traditional italian liqueur made from walnuts. Skip Rock collects their walnuts from a specific breed of walnut tree. During harvest season they comb Snohomish County for unused walnut trees to harvest their dark bounty. I’m not typically interested in nut flavored things. As a kid I would pick out only the few nuts I liked from the mixed nut bowl my grandma set out over the Holidays. So I was surprised at how much I liked the flavor when I tasted this Nocino. The flavors are well balanced— no one facet of the flavor is overwhelming. The sweetness marries well with the walnut flavor, a perfect treat to be enjoyed on vanilla ice...
